I have taught about China and Japan in the Asian Studies Department at Berea College since 2002.

Initially trained in early Chinese studies, I have become more focused on early Japan and its cultural exchanges with China.

My teaching and research interests include:

  • early Chinese thought
  • religion in classical Japan
  • East Asian spirituality in both East Asian and U.S. popular culture
  • tradition and modernity in contemporary East Asia
  • My book-length publications include:

  • Confucius in East Asia (1st ed., 2013; 2nd ed., 2022)
  • Chinese Influences on Japanese Religious Traditions (2021)
  • Daoism in Japan (2015)
  • Teaching Confucianism (2008)
