Create a deliverable sound byte of one of the Sparkplugs

Objectives

We have videos of each of the eight "Sparkplugs" which are each too long to be useful.  Peter Hille has listened to your suggestion and will get new video of each of these people telling his or her story.  However, Peter still wants to use this early footage to get " sound byte teasers."

You will be assigned one of the following Sparkplug stories:
Please RIGHT CLICK on these links to download the files.  They are not so large as to be problematic unless you try to view them without downloading.  (Clicking the links singly will NOT work, so be sure to RIGHT-CLICK and download.)

Today's in-class group project work will require both individual work and group work to be completed.
Do the following individually (not talking with anyone), taking notes in a Word document named YourUserName-GP1:
  1. Watch the entire video, taking notes on the following:
    1. Community:
In 2-3 sentences describe where is the community this Sparkplug has worked in.  What is it's name? What is it like there?
    2. Change:
In 3-5 sentences, describe the change which has occurred in this community.
    3. Learning:
In 3-5 sentences, describe what important "learning" others might gain from studying the change which has occurred in this community.
  2. Bearing in mind, what you wrote for question 1, identify what you consider the most important "sound-byte" from the video.  This should be no more than 1.5 minutes in length.  In your Word document, as carefullly as you can, mark down the times which begin and end this soundbyte: (eg 20:21:55-20:22:40) or simply describe what is said as best as you can.
  3. In a full paragraph, describe why you this this is the most important soundbyte.
  4. Submit this Word document named YourUserName-GP1 to Moodle.  It will be graded as a part of your grade for this project assignment.
Next in your group, discuss your individual documents and create a new a word document named Sparkplug-GP1.doc  This group document will be not only graded but also delivered to Peter Hille and to the Sparkplug, so please take it seriously.
  1. Open a new Word document named SparkplugName-GP1.
  2. Put all of your names at the top of the Word document.
  3. As a group, discuss your individual entries for the following.  Combine and edit to create a group document which addresses:
  4. Next discussion your sound bytes as a group.  Watch the sound bytes identified by each group member and discuss together what you consider the most important "sound-bytes" from the video.
  5. Remember that Brushy Fork would like their digital materials to evoke the following:
Accessible, Current, Dynamic, Engaging, Interactive, Responsive, Credible, Friendly but professional, Non-partisan, Progressive but respectful of all views, Neither utopian nor dystopian in our view of the region, and a Place to find answers and solutions.
  6. As a group, using the Macs with the default iMovie settings, create a "sound-byte" (or a set of sound bytes with very smooth non-distracting transitions between them) which is no more than 2.5 minutes in length.
  7. In your video edit, you must be sure to introduce the speaker appropriately, to add an appropriate title screen, good transitions, a screen with credits (your group members are the editors) using default settings:
    1. Title screen- Black background.  First line: Sparkplug's name  Second Line: Community Name Sparkplug.
eg: First line: Corey Craig Second Line: Rockcastle County Sparkplug.
    2. Transition: Fade to White
    3. Selected video using only fades or blurs in the middle
    4. Transition: Fade to Black
    5. Scrolling Credits: "Made Possible by Brushy Fork Institute"  followed by a list of your names as editors.
  8. Remember that the way you edit these videos and the choices of backgrounds, transitions, and titles, etc, should be consistent and should bear Brushy Fork's image in mind.
  9. Create a paragraph which reflects on why your group consider this video segment to be an appropriate teaser sound byte.
  10. When you are finished, have one member of your group upload the Word document SparkplugName-GP1.doc to the appropriate location in Moodle and have another group member upload the edited video named SparkplugName-GP1.mov or to a public link in a DropBox folder which has a correct link in the Word document.  Circulate both the Word document and the video so that all members of your group has copies of both on his or her laptop.
  11. On Thursday, your group will present this material to the entire class and to Peter Hille who will be in class.
