Example by Dr. Jan Pearce:

Berea finds a golden goose

Artist's Statement:  Having been at Bere College since 1992,  I feel that Berea has become lost.  At first glance you may believe that I represent the hope that Berea finds more capital.  There are a number of symbols used: the desert sand represents being lost, the stars indicating hope, the roadsign representing a path to the future, and the oasis represents a possible salvation. However, more reflection will reveal darker meanings.  The goose is intended as an ironic allusion to "the goose that laid the golden egg," an Aesop's fable which is a moral tale about the hazards of greed. The audience cannot tell if the oasis is completely surrounded by desert or even if it is a mirage. With this, I am indicating that Berea's current problems are unlikely to be solved entirely by money alone.
