Contemporary Reviews Information

The items collected here include reviews and articles by others about Chesnutt and his works. We have almost one hundred articles, and we add new materials regularly.

During his lifetime, Chesnutt's works earned publication notices and reviews in a wide variety of newspapers and magazines, and our collection offers some sense of how he was received at various moments in his career. Our collection includes reviews published in city newspapers and regional magazines, and articles about Chesnutt include discussions of his work in general, notices when he was awarded the prestigious Spingarn Medal, and obituaries. The collection includes materials from the African American press as well as the white press.

All materials have been scanned from the original print version found either in the Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro or from a copy secured through interlibrary loan from other libraries across the country. The scanning was done in the Jackson Library computer laboratory by John M. Freiermuth, a graduate student in the Department of English, University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and enthusiastic Chesnutt bibliography compiler. The OCR scanning was done through the Caere Omnipage Professional 9.0. Proof reading was performed by John M. Freiermuth.
